Arts

Arts

Students will learn the disciplines of visual arts, music and drama, as well as learning about the arts (the skills and processes involved) and through the arts (artists, perspectives, themes and ideas using the arts). In all areas, imagination, creativity and original thinking are valued. The creative process is seen as a driving force in learning through inquiry.

Facilities and resources include a Performing Arts Room, a wide selection of art mediums and materials, musical and percussion instruments.

There have been many school wide occasions that celebrate the arts.
• Arts Week has become annual event where the children have an opportunity to showcase their talents. The art gallery, music and dance performances, art walkabout and outside performances bring all aspects together.
• The after school creative dance club has led to participation in the Hong Kong Youth Arts Festival. The children have the opportunity to perform in a theatre to a wider audience.
• The music department has been involved in many school events, including musical evenings, orchestra and choir performances.

A Music Policy for Sha Tin Junior School

A General Outline

Music is taught throughout the school by a specialist music teacher. Year 1 to 6 has a 45 minutes lesson per cycle.

In addition to the above, pupils have the opportunities to develop musical skills through various performances, musical concerts, after school music activities and private instrumental lessons which take place after school.

As pupils enter Year 3, they have the opportunity to learn the recorder. This will carry on till Year 6. Treble (alto) and tenor recorders are introduced in Year 5 but is not compulsory for all children. It our way of introducing music notation and provides an excellent base for further instrumental work.

During music lessons, musical areas like BEAT, RHYTHM, PITCH, TEMPO, DYNAMICS, TONE COLOUR, TEXTURE, FORM and STYLE are taught.

The scheme at Sha Tin Junior School aims to introduce pupils to making their own improvised sounds and composing short pieces through their units of inquiry, performing established music and listening to the performance of others. The ability to listen and enquire with discrimination and sensitivity is an important skill which has wide reaching effects across the whole curriculum.
