Information and Communication Technologies
At SJS, learning technologies along with information literacies are viewed as tools and sets of literacies for learning that should be integrated into all trans-disciplinary units of inquiry, rather than separate subjects.
Learning technologies are used to support the development of elements of the PYP learner profile and specific trans-disciplinary skills such as social skills, communication skills, thinking skills, research skills and self-management skills. They are also used to help children develop their understanding of key concepts or follow particular lines of inquiry.
Children use learning technologies in both specialist ICT lessons and in class lessons. Teachers plan collaboratively using the ESF scope and sequence for Learning Technologies to guide teaching. The vast majority of teaching is of a trans-disciplinary nature within the context of the POI. However, there is also the occasional need to teach particular ICT skills discreetly.
All children receive one 45 minute lesson each cycle taken by the ICT specialist teacher in the ICT suite. In addition, class teachers provide further opportunities for all children to use learning technologies in each cycle.
Modern computers are available in both a computer room of 30 computers and in classrooms. All year groups have 30 laptops or fixed PCs which are shared between classes. In addition, computers are also available in the school library and mandarin teaching rooms. All classrooms are equipped with projectors and electronic whiteboards. A wide range of other equipment is available including digital cameras and video cameras, electronic microscopes, visualisers and scanners.
The school network provides wired and wireless connections to storage, applications and online learning resources. Children’s access to ICT services is controlled through the use of a network profile. Children’s can access their stored work and applications in all areas of the school. Site licenses for major software suites are available on all computers.
All computers have high speed Internet access. Web filtering software is installed and children are taught to use the Internet safely. Guidelines for teachers and children are set out in our Internet Access Policy. "VELoCity" is the school’s online learning platform. The school library database can be searched online by staff and pupils. The school has purchased online subscriptions to additional resources which can be used at home as well as at school.
