Medical
Health and Safety
The school has a nurse who is on call during school hours to meet the medical needs of students and staff. Parents are asked to provide the nurse with full medical details of children to enable the school to respond to any situation with confidence. Students who fall sick at school will be sent to the nurse who will contact the child's parents if he/she needs to be taken home. Schools are busy and crowded places and we ask parents not to send children to school with infectious conditions. Sometimes the comfort of home care is the most appropriate solution even for common conditions such as a heavy cold or influenza. The nurse will administer medicines prescribed to students but these must be given to the nurse before the start of the school session and must be clearly labelled with the name and class of the pupil together with any instructions. All staff members are made aware of any special or specific requirements of students so they can respond appropriately in an emergency. Our nurse will also arrange for parents to participate in inoculations provided by government agencies as and when appropriate.
Medical Emergencies
Serious Accident Procedure
Fortunately serious accidents and medical emergencies are rare in school. Occasionally, however, incidents do occur which require emergency medical treatment. Our qualified school nurse will be called upon in such cases and in the event of a serious accident we follow the procedure outlined below.
If a serious accident happens anywhere in the school:
We will not move the injured child but will immediately send to the school Office to summon help from the school nurse . The school Principal or Deputy Principal will also be sent for.
If appropriate the school nurse or qualified First Aider will administer first aid to the injured child. If appropriate the child will be moved to the School Medical Room. If there is any doubt about the safety of moving the injured child he/she will be left where he/she is and be given comfort and reassurance until the arrival of the emergency medical services.
If the accident is serious the Office will telephone immediately for an ambulance and then phone the parent/guardian using the contact numbers lodged with the school. Either the parent will come to the school or meet the ambulance at the Prince of Wales Hospital.
An adult from school will escort the child to the Hospital and stay with the child until the arrival of the parent. (Please note that only the parent of the child can authorise medical treatment at the hospital as it is not legal to give permission for medical treatment for a child that is not your own.)
The person who was supervising the child at the time of the accident, or the school nurse, will make a written report of the incident on the “Accident Report Form” available in the Office.
